Welcome to the Hastings Bike Project
2023 was a busy year for us and the project was open more than we ever have been in the last ten years. We tried new things, found what worked and what didn’t. We added paid servicing and hire to help us with funding. Group rides to meet new people and encourage others to get out on their bikes. We added extra children’s sessions to our normal once a week Bike Kitchen offering. We built a new website and have been more active on social media, forging new connections and wider support. And between all that we have repaired and re-homed dozens of bikes otherwise destined for the tip. Most importantly we have listened to the community that we have met and learned a great deal about what we need to do to be as effective as we can with what we have, to encourage as many of the people of Hastings to reuse, repair and ride bikes.
We're taking a pause over winter to take stock and working behind the scenes to improve the building and plan for the year ahead. Thank you to all the invaluable volunteers, customers and people who have donated bikes and to everyone who has come past and been curious and shared their biking needs.
We aim to divert bikes out of the waste stream as an alternative to throw away culture. We take unwanted bikes and use them to empower our community through volunteer sessions, knowledge sharing and a facility to repair them. We aim to provide access to fun, healthy and sustainable transport across social barriers and encourage riding wherever possible.
